These two First Day Covers are the third pair to be issued as part of the ongoing five-year Civil War Sesquicentennial series.
Each of the #6 3/4 envelopes carries one of two Forever® stamps depicting significant conflicts of 1863 — Battle of Gettysburg and Battle of Vicksburg — cancelled with an official First Day of Issue black pictorial postmark, that includes the name of its corresponding city of issuance, either Gettysburg or Vicksburg.
Corps badges and military insignia inspired the postmark design, which features a shield containing stripes, a cavalry mount, and the date “1863,” while “The Civil War” appears in narrow typography suggested by recruiting posters of the era.
