This collectible keepsake package is a handsome reminder of a critical and tumultuous period in our nation's history. The package includes a double-sided souvenir sheet of 12 stamps (two designs) and two Digital Color Postmark First Day Covers.
The Civil War: 1863 (Forever®) souvenir sheet is the third of five annual issues in the Civil War Sesquicentennial series. On the front are two Forever® stamps — one depicting the Battle of Gettysburg, the largest battle of the war, and the other depicting the Battle of Vicksburg, a complex Union campaign to gain control of the Mississippi River. The two stamps are set against a background photograph taken by Mathew Brady shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg of captured Confederate soldiers.
The sheet features comments on the war by Abraham Lincoln, Clara Barton, Rufus R. Dawes and William Tunnard, as well as lyrics from the popular Civil War song, “Lorena.” On the reverse side of the souvenir sheet are five repeats of each of the two stamps and text about the significance of the two battles.
Each of the Digital Color Postmark First Day Covers (# 6 3/4 envelopes) carries one of the two stamps cancelled with its official First Day of Issue color postmark. The blue, gray, and orange postmark design includes typography inspired by historic woodblock prints, a horse silhouette, and the date and location (either Gettysburg or Vicksburg) of the stamp issuance.
