In a 1974 New York Times book review, Dr. Maya Angelou was described as writing “like a song… [with] a living rhythm completely her own.” Indeed, the voice of the poet, actress, and champion of civiil rights resonated across pages as well as stages to reach countless lives.

So it was fitting for art director Ethel Kessler to embrace the power of words when designing Angelou’s stamp. “It’s her words that add depth to this stamp and to our memory of her,” says Kessler, who believed strongly that an image alone wouldn’t have conveyed the poet’s impact. To that end, the design pairs a widely-recognized phrase used by Angelou with the 2013 oil portrait she loved, which now hangs in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. A short excerpt from her book Letter to My Daughter appears in the selvage.

Kessler carried the power of words into yet another recent design, From Me to You (on page 6), which celebrates the connections we make through the mail and arrives just in time for the National Card and Letter Writing Month. The stamp sheet features colorful decals and labels in selvage perfect for personalizing an envelope and complementing the handwritten message inside.

“When I sit down to write a note,” Kessler says, “I feel like I’m with that person at the moment. I hope they feel treasured as a friend, and From Me to You captures that.”

May these stamps and many others in this catalog bring meaning to your correspondence as well as your collection.
